Congratulations to Beacon Hospital in Selangor Malaysia for achieving a Capture the Fracture silver star!
Led by Dr. Joon-Kiong Lee, the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at this private hospital was initiated in April 2017. This FLS from Selangor, Malaysia, first joined Capture the Fracture in September 2017. As of August 2019, after a reevaluation, it is recognized as a Silver star FLS nationally and internationally.
The FLS program oversees hip fracture, vertebral fracture and other fragility fracture patients, both inpatients and outpatients. The FLS team involves orthopaedic surgeon, geriatrician, FLS coordinator, physiotherapist and occupational therapist. Additionally, three dieticians are involved in patient management. The FLS service is also supported by the hospital management and marketing teams.
In 2018 all patients presented to this private clinic with fragility fractures were captured and assessed for secondary prevention.
A key aspect of the services is education of patients and their family members. Open discussions are made with patients’ families to make decisions on treatments and post fracture rehabilitation. The FLS team ensures that siblings and daughters of patients above the age of 50 years (or post-menopausal) also receive consultation of DXA scan and risk assessment. In this way this FLS also provides primary prevention measures.
The Beacon Hospital FLS program is exemplary of an effective FLS established in a private setting in Malaysia.
